I want to share something personal and shocking with you, which I think summarizes the greatest threat to America.
I'm a fairly recent Ron Paul supporter of this year, being converted from a daily Sean Hannity listening, "Great American," who was begrudgingly supporting John McCain in order to stop Barack Obama - the only thing I really respected about McCain is his military service and sacrifices, but I had always voted for the leading Republican by default and figured we had to 'win' the war in Iraq.
Of course, that naivety is forever gone now, I will never look back, and I am going out of my way to get to Ron Paul's Rally for the Republic in Minnesota next week to show my support. It's amazing the changes you can go through with some dedicated research and study.
However, it was no simple matter to realize the truth, it took me months of research to break the chains that had entrapped my mind for my entire life, and gain the basic knowledge of what is really happening to America.
Last semester I gave a Liberty presentation to my philosophy class. It was focused on the current government, the United States Constitution, and Liberty. I only focused on the facts that I had learned and did not offer any speculation. Here are two of the non-vulgar replies to a follow up email from American college students;
"shutup" - Nathan M.
"if you don't like America leave. or you can do what everyone else does and accept it. then you can spend your time on something that actually matters" - Blair F.
The first reaction of many people to hearing the truth is to become angry.
Here is a basic outline of the presentation:
Under what circumstances should the government be allowed to violate the Constitution of the United States?
None, the Constitution was specifically designed to create a government of and for the people, and to specifically restrict the powers of the the government and protect the rights of the people. The Constitution is based upon the natural liberties of the people and designed to protect them.
The main moral theory I will use in defense of this position is Libertarianism. Libertarianism is the theory that the sole purpose of the government is to protect the liberties of the people, specifically the natural rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This involves protecting people's property and protecting people from harm, as both are a factor of life and liberty.
In regard to the case, the Constitution specifically protects the liberties of the people. Since the government violated the Constitution, the government also violated the liberties of the people. In doing so, the government caused irreparable harm to not only the people it violated directly, but also to the credibility that all Americans place with the government. Since the Constitution is the Supreme Law of the land, the government also broke the law. How can a government that breaks the Supreme Law be trusted? In trying to protect the people by breaking the law, the government only harmed the people and itself.
The government may claim that it was only acting in the best interests of the people, but is the government really acting in the best interests of the people when it breaks the laws of the people in order to protect them?
The government might also claim that it has a duty to do whatever is necessary in the case of an emergency, even violate the law, but as this case proves, in throwing out the law it's easy to violate the very things the government claims to be protecting. Benjamin Franklin is often quoted as saying that if we give up our liberties for security, then we lose both. What does that mean? It means that if we allow the government to infringe upon our liberties in the name of security, then we have not only lost our liberties, but we have lost our security due to the intrusiveness of the government trying to enforce security.
Ultimately, we are a Republic of Law, governed by the Supreme Law, the Constitution. This is the one document that sets us apart from other nations, without the Constitution, we are no different than any other country. In violating the Constitution and our liberties, we violate what has made us so successful.
However, that is exactly what is happening today, to an alarming extent, in favor of supposed security.
